About me
Well...how did I get here?
I have a B.A. in English literature from Indiana University. (My honors thesis was on the period/dot at the end of the penultimate chapter of Joyce’s Ulysses. And yes, I did use the much-disputed Gabler text.) I started a master's degree at Columbia University - New York life was for me but academic life wasn't.
I'm a born word geek, not a hard-core computer geek. The work I do now didn’t really exist when I got my degree, but to me Joyce is the perfect hypertext author. And as soon as a saw the web, I knew that this library-writ-large was just the place for me. I started “viewing source” on other people’s pages, and found that using HTML was not very different than marking up a print manuscript.
The very first site I worked on was that of The Park Slope Food Coop. In exchange for my labor, I learned how to produce HTML via a Word macro. The rest, as they say, is history.
In late 2008, I moved to Bellevue, WA where I live with my Miniature Schnauzer, Ozzie.
What do I do during the rare hours when I am not at the computer?
I love music. Current favorites include The Divine Comedy, Belle and Sebastian, The Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, and Franz Ferdinand. I am quoted in a book about the Smiths, which might just be the thing I am most proud of in my life.
I still love to read books, mostly modern British fiction (think Zadie Smith, Martin Amis, and Ian McEwan) and topical nonfiction that keeps me awake at night (think pandemics, germ warfare, and American politics).
I’m also a cyclist and have completed several century rides, including the North Fork Century, Montauk Century and the Transportation Alternatives NYC Century.
